Yes, it is summer vacation time and the IPL cricket tournament is also peaking. Despite this, it was a full house at the monthly concert organized by Ranjani Fine Arts on May 11th, 2013 at Sobha Lakeview Clubhouse, Bellandur. The rasikas were treated to a delightful musical performance by Vidwan Sankaran Namboothiri, Vidwan Palakkad Swaminathan (violin), Vidwan Vaikom Venugopal (mridangam) and Vidwan Rajesh (ghatam).
Sankaran Namboothiri planned his concert to cover kritis by maximum number of composers in a variety of rAgAs. All the artistes demonstrated high energy throughout the concert and performed with sincerity. The concert itself could be looked at in 3 parts – the initial set of quick songs, the leisurely elaboration of the main kriti and a series of tukuddas to end the concert on a high note. The first few kritis set the tempo of the concert as all madhyama kAla kritis were chosen and were also embellished with pacy swarams. The swara patterns in each of the kritis were sequentially developed to provide a soothing feeling of the rAga bhAva.
There were several interesting and complex swara patterns, which evinced a spirited return from the violinist too. There was an evocative delineation of rAgAs pantuvarAli and ranjani that lent a distinctive colour. All through Part 1, one wondered when a nereval would come by, but that was reserved for Part 2!As one would observe the still after a storm, Sankaran Namboothiri slowed down the pace of the concert by choosing madhyamAvati rAga as the main. An expansive rAga AlApana with weighty phrases enhanced the overall mood. Palakkad Swaminathan on the violin displayed finesse in the return. The stage was now set for the grand kriti “pAlinchu kAmakshi”. After a brilliant rendition of the kriti, nereval followed – not at the usual place (kAntamaku), but the pallavi line itself was chosen for the nereval in the higher octave. A nice round of dwi-kAla swaras set the stage for tani Avartanam. Venugopal and Rajesh paired well to produce a spirited tani with intricate, yet melodic patterns. How nice it would be wind up a wholesome meal with sweets ! There were plenty of them for the taking in rAgAs like bEhag, sindhu bhairavi, rEvati, abheri et al. The rasikAs enjoyed this last part which led to closing out the concert on a high note.
Overall, it was a grand concert by the artistes that elevated the mood of the rasikAs. Those who preferred to watch IPL drama surely would have enjoyed those 3 hours…but, those who chose to listen to this music still continue to enjoy the divine experience !
